Move-out day at condemned Greensboro District apartments leaves residents carrying lives down dark stairwells

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Residents of a condemned apartment building on West Market Street were allowed back inside Friday for a limited time to retrieve their belongings, navigating dark stairwells and carrying items down multiple flights of stairs in a building without power or elevators.

A building employee was on site to open doors at The District at West Market, but police said property management never appeared during the move-out window.

According to an email sent by property management, Phalzgraf Communities 9 LLC, on Thursday, residents were granted staggered access by floor on Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The email outlined approximately 30 minutes per resident, encouraged tenants to avoid removing large furniture, and instructed residents to bring flashlights due to the lack of power.
