Former Eden dump truck driver held under $1.3M bond, judge denies motion to reduce

EDEN, N.C. — New statements from prosecutors were front and center in court Wednesday as the driver accused in a deadly crash that killed four utility workers in Eden faced multiple felony charges.

Michael Vernon, 66, was arrested in November after a Rockingham County grand jury handed down felony indictments connected to the April 24 crash. He faces four counts of second-degree murder without regard and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

During the hearing, the state argued that Vernon was never legally licensed to operate the City of Eden dump truck involved in the crash. Prosecutors told the court that if Vernon had followed the law, he would never have been behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck the workers…
