GREENSBORO, N.C. — My husband went through a Triad McDonald’s drive-thru the other day and saw the round-up, round-down notice on the window. Some stores and fast food spots started their own money guidelines as soon as the news of discontinued pennies was out. And while we’re probably going to see more of them in the future, a local banker says, we’ve all been doing this long before the penny issue.
“If I stop at the gas station down the road and my total comes out to $10.02 and I pay with $10, they’re gonna say, don’t worry about the pennies. Or if I give them $10 and a nickel, they’re gonna say. Here’s your 3 cents, and I’ll say, don’t worry about it, just give it to somebody else. We’re, in a lot of ways, we’re already kind of rounding ourselves if we choose to pay with cash,” said Matt Harbour, Carter Bank, Retail Area Manager.
But there are still a lot of businesses that are giving cash back and charging, to the penny, no rounding…
