Chance of snow, highs in mid-30s Sunday in the Piedmont Triad

PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — Temperatures this evening fall through the 40s with skies remaining partly cloudy until late evening. Clouds start increasing after 8 p.m., leaving us with cloudy skies heading into the overnight hours. Rain chances start increasing after 10 p.m. and we’ll hold on to showers continuing through the overnight and into early Sunday morning.

Temperatures remain above freezing until early Sunday morning, around daybreak, rain will begin to cool down the atmosphere and colder air will start to filter in. This gives us the setup for a transition to a rain/snow mix between 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday. The most recent data Saturday afternoon suggests moisture sticks around through early Sunday afternoon when the cold air has settled in. This gives us the best window for snow showers between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Into late afternoon and early evening, a few lingering snow showers are possible before ending and skies begin to clear into Sunday night.

If the moisture is able to stick around through the early afternoon, snowfall totals will generally be less than 1″ with most likely amounts around 0.5″. Isolated spots of 1″ are possible from east of Greensboro towards Raleigh. Accumulations would be on elevated surfaces and grassy areas, with grass still visible. Snow won’t stick to the roads; however, it will make them wet which could cause black ice issues into Sunday night and Monday morning. This is dependent on the moisture lingering into the late morning and early afternoon hours and whatever falling helping cool the atmosphere through a process known as evaporative cooling (as recent data suggests). If moisture doesn’t stick around, there’s still the chance we don’t see anything…
