Cause of barn fire that killed 36 horses left undetermined, officials say

SEAGROVE, N.C. — The Randolph County Fire Marshal’s Office was unable to determine the cause of the barn fire that killed 36 horses in Seagrove, the agency announced in a press release on Friday.

The fire was reported at 12:48 p.m. on Feb. 15 at a roughly 15,000-square-foot barn at 8710 U.S. Highway 220, where 43 horses were being boarded, according to fire officials. Crews from the Seagrove, Ulah, East Side, Cole-Ridge Erect and Star fire departments were initially dispatched.

Responding units arrived to find the barn heavily involved in fire. A second alarm was requested at 1:13 p.m., bringing additional crews from the Westside, Biscoe and Westmoore fire departments to the scene…
