Fire, explosion destroys Chim-Tech building in Thomasville; Here’s what we know

THOMASVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — Thomasville fire officials say the investigation into the massive fire that destroyed a building on Payne Road is now complete.

Just before midnight on Saturday, the fire broke out at the Thomasville facility of Chim-Tech, a fireplace mantle manufacturer. Thomasville Deputy Fire Chief Michael Wilson says crews battled the fire for more than five hours.

Wilson says the fire was contained to one building and described the building as a “complete loss.” What’s left are mostly piles of bricks and the bare bones of the building. No injuries were reported.

The investigation wrapped up on Monday, but the cause remains undetermined due to the collapsed building structure and the intensity of the fire. Wilson says the extreme heat of the fire most likely led to the propane tanks for the forklift to explode and spread the fire…
