Greensboro parking deck becomes real-world training site before demolition

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Before it’s torn down, a downtown Greensboro parking deck is being used for something critical: preparing first responders for building collapses.

Inside the Davie Street Parking Deck this week, firefighters with the Greensboro Fire Department and North Carolina’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 6 are training for some of the most dangerous rescue scenarios they could face.

The three-day exercise, running through Friday, brings together crews and structural engineers from across North Carolina. It also gives teams a rare opportunity to practice inside a real structure before the deck is demolished…
