Asheboro man sentenced to death for 2021 killing of 23-year-old

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A Randolph County man has been sentenced to death for the first-degree murder of a man whose body was recovered from a Moore County rock quarry more than four years ago.

A Randolph County Superior Court jury unanimously convicted Branson Raye Lambert and recommended the death penalty in the 2021 killing of Dillion Wirt, 23. The court accepted the jury’s recommendation and formally sentenced Lambert to death.

Wirt was shot and killed in the early morning hours of the day police were called to the 400 block of East Salisbury Street in Asheboro around 2:13 a.m. Investigators determined the shooting actually occurred in the 600 block of Farr Street.
