Greensboro’s Community Safety Department proposes new permanent housing program

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The City of Greensboro’s Community Safety Department (CSD) proposed a new housing program called Housing First Plus to provide permanent housing for people and families experiencing homelessness.

The plan’s pilot program would provide apartment units to 10 families currently living in their cars and 20 other unhoused individuals. The 20 individuals would be included under the “Plus” part of the program, which also offers 24/7 crisis support.

Housing First Plus would eventually end the expanded Doorway project, which CSD called “high cost” in a press release. They go on to say that under the current program, the 20 individuals picked for this project each cost the city and local healthcare systems around $30,000 on things like emergency medical intervention, police man-hours, and court costs…
