GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The week starts off unseasonably cool with showers lingering around. But we quickly rebound back to summery heat with a drier end to the week.
TODAY: Rain Continues, Unseasonably Cool
Rain continues on and off throughout our Monday with morning showers tapering off midday, but then picking back up in the mid afternoon to evening. The heaviest action tracks across the northern North Carolina mountains. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect for Yancey, Mitchell and McDowell counties through 8 p.m.
While these are the most likely areas to get heavy, flooding rains, heavy downpours are possible anywhere and could lead to localized flooding problems. Afternoon showers and storms bring rainfall between a quarter and half inch, with higher amounts up to 3+ inches possible in embedded downpours, especially in the mountains.
For the Upstate, isolated damaging straight-line winds are possible with any storms, but its a lower risk than previous day.
On the Road: Afternoon storms could spark localized flash flooding in poor drainage areas and across creeks and streams that already run high. Remember, turn around, don’t drown.
It’s unseasonably cool for mid-July as a backdoor cold front slides south across the area. Highs are only in the upper 70s in the Upstate, while the mountains are in the low 70s. This is 10° to 15° below normal.
It’s a well welcome break from the summery heat, but keep in mind it is still quite muggy so it’s not as comfortable as it could be.
TUESDAY: Drier, Still Cool
A few showers linger overnight, tapering off into the morning hours. But Tuesday brings gradual improvement. Morning clouds clear out, giving way to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Highs remain below average with the Upstate in the upper 70s to the low 80s while the mountains peak in the mid 70s.
LATE WEEK: Summery Heat Returns
The typical summer heat returns on Wednesday as highs jump to the mid to upper 80s across the Western Carolinas. Mostly sunny skies dominate as high pressure builds in from the west. Thursday cranks up the heat even more as highs soar into the mid 90s for the Upstate and the upper 80s in the mountains.
Humidity creeps higher which means our feels like temperatures return to the low triple digits, not high enough for heat advisories, but still back to hazardous territory.
The overall forecast remains dry, but we can’t completely rule out and isolated pop-up storm. The heat continues into the weekend with highs in the low to mid 90s in the Upstate and the upper 80s in the mountains. The humidity doesn’t back off either so each day, we see triple digit feels like temps in the Upstate. Only isolated afternoon showers and storms are possible with most areas staying dry through the weekend…
