A South Carolina man was recently identified in Athens as the perpetrator of a romance fraud that is known as “catfishing,” a term associated with a con artist who uses fake images and details to defraud his victim on a social media platform.
In this case, Athens-Clarke police say the suspect not only successfully fooled his victim into believing he had developed a relationship with a woman, but he also tried to “catfish” police officers or link the agency to the catfish operation, a move that police noted would eventually lead to a felony charge.
