‘He gave his life trying to save hers’: Woman sentenced in Easley officer’s train death

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A woman charged in connection to the death of Easley Police Officer Matthew Hare was sentenced in Greenville on Friday.

Gabrielle Benites previously pleaded guilty on July 10 in Pickens County to breach of peace and aggravated nature. During Friday’s deferred sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented a negotiated seven-year sentence agreement.

What led to the fatal call

Officer Hare, 22, was struck and killed by an oncoming Amtrak passenger train around 5 a.m. on Aug. 2, 2023, while attempting to remove Benites from railroad tracks along East Main Street in Easley, officials said…
