TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A lawsuit filed on Thursday alleges that a Greenville County deputy acted negligently by shooting and killing a man experiencing a mental health crisis in 2024.
According to the lawsuit, 66-year-old Joseph Dominic Mason was experiencing a mental health crisis on Dec. 28, 2024. His wife, Robyn Mason, contacted 911 and told them that her husband was threatening to kill himself. She also shared that he struggled with alcoholism and depression, and dispatch relayed this to responding deputies.
The lawsuit claims that upon his arrival at the Mason’s home on Mountain Lake Lane in Travelers Rest, Greenville County Deputy Alexander Root approached “with no visible plan in place” and his weapon drawn before firing 17 shots at Mason on the front porch and “killing him instantly.”…
