At about 2:30 p.m. on October 15, Greenville County deputies tried to stop a vehicle reported stolen near Simpsonville, South Carolina. The driver, a 16-year-old, did not stop, according to the sheriff’s office. The vehicle crashed into a house on Renwood Road. No one was injured, officials said. The driver and his 15-year-old passenger ran from the wreck. Deputies caught the passenger on foot. The driver was taken into custody in Spartanburg County. Both teens were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office released video of the incident this past weekend. It shows a wrecked white SUV against the house, with heavy damage around the garage. The sheriff’s office said deputies did not pursue the vehicle before it crashed. That detail matters more than the wreck. South Carolina’s new fleeing law took effect five months before this crash, and its felony tier only applies when a deputy is actually chasing you.
