Family provides update on Upstate deputy shot in line of duty

OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The family of an Upstate deputy shot in the line of duty provided an update on his health as he continues to “show progress of some degree each day.”

The update, provided via the CaringBridge website, stated that Corporal Lucas Watts has fully emerged from his coma state after being shot in the head in November.

The news comes just 23 days after Watts spoke his first words since the shooting .

Since speaking his famous first words “the fan” 23 days ago, he has progressed so much in terms of speech. The nurses and doctors explained that it could be some time before he could fully talk because his muscles have weakened after not speaking for so long. When he first tried to speak, it was a very faint whisper that was difficult to hear. Over the course of the last couple weeks, he has gotten a little louder and clearer with his words. He still isn’t speaking full sentences but he is getting better at indicating what he wants or needs for the most part.
