ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two people for allegedly stealing nearly $10,000 from an elderly woman.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scammers found their prey during a yard cleanup. The 76-year-old Belton woman hired Calvin Robert Allen to remove trees from one of her properties in the fall.
Allen completed the work, but then came back to the woman and allegedly said that the check did not go through. The woman then wrote Allen a new check to ensure he was paid for his work.
Allen and his girlfriend Jasmine Crawford then allegedly took the woman’s financial information and paid multiple bills, including a purchase of around $8,000.
The case’s lead detective has been able to recover some of the money that was lost.
Both Allen and Crawford were charged with Financial Identity Fraud, with Allen getting an additional charge of petit larceny. The two are being housed at the Anderson County Detention Center.
