Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina served 580 families and 1,320 individuals at its food distribution on Jan. 5 at the Jockey Lot in Williamston.
The Anderson food distribution is every first Friday and Abbeville every second Friday. The location is usually different from month to month.
“We often revisit locations throughout the year,” according to Donal Dickens, the regional branch coordinator at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Anderson.
The nonprofit serves 10 countie s in South Carolina, including Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Greenwood, Lancaster, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, Union, and York.
Dickens said 16 volunteers from Electrolux in Starr helped distribute food in 27–degree temperatures.
“We put boxes and bags with canned goods, meat, fruit, and cheese in vehicles lined up as early as 7 a.m.,” Dickens said.
Anderson food bank works to provide for those in need
Dickens said every family that attends receives a 7 to 10 day food supply. However, the organization needs more food at most distribution events to catch up with demand.
