Southern Living names The Beacon as a beloved burger joint

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Southern Living deemed an Upstate restaurant as one of the South’s most beloved burger joints.

The Beacon, located at 255 John B. White Senior Boulevard in Spartanburg, made the list .

It was first opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1946 by John White.

Throughout the years, it has become known for its Chili Cheese A-Plenty, a chili cheeseburger with a mound of fries and onion rings.

Along with its famous burgers, The Beacon sells more tea than any other restaurant in the world, according to its website. It goes through 3,000 pounds of sugar a week.

“Did we mention it is not for the faint of heart?” Southern Living said.

Also on the list was The Varsity in Atlanta, Georgia, and Melvins’ Hamburgers and Hotdogs in Elizabethtown, North Carolina.
