Fmr. First Baptist Spartanburg admin accused of stealing over $200,000 from the church

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A former First Baptist Spartanburg administrator is accused of stealing over $200,000 from the church.

According to a four-page court document filed Tuesday with the Assistant United States Attorney, David Dennis is accused of taking $213,278 from First Baptist Spartanburg.

The document said Dennis used four different credit cards assigned to the church to pay for personal and family expenses.

In one transaction on January 6, 2020, Dennis received a reimbursement for a personal expense to a barbeque restaurant disguised as a church-related expense for $1,231.23.

Dennis has been charged with one count of wire fraud.

First Baptist Church Spartanburg released the following statement:

We are encouraged by a positive development in the investigation of our former church administrator. We’ve been involved with the investigation over the past year and were aware that papers would be filed by the Assistant US Attorney in federal court his week. This is a positive step as the case moves through the legal process. Because the legal process continues, it is not yet appropriate to make further comments. We expect to have an opportunity to comment in greater detail as the legal process comes to a resolution in the coming weeks.
