Hemp providers put on notice in Greenville Co. for THC

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – Greenville County authorities said they are taking new enforcement actions for hemp products in the area. They said after what they’ve seen in recent months, Greenville is at the precipice of a healthcare crisis.

A 2018 hemp farming bill passed in South Carolina legalized hemp, as long as it contained less than .3 percent of delta-9 THC, the psychoactive chemical found in cannabis.

The law doesn’t mention other forms of THC, like Delta 8, and it doesn’t have regulations for other hemp products, like food or drinks infused with THC.

In turn, Greenville County officials said they are seeing people using the wording of the law as a loophole, and they want to set the record straight.

“It may say delta-9, 5 milligrams, it may say delta-10, 5 milligrams, it may just say 10 milligrams of something, but the public doesn’t understand what those are, and they are not regulated by DHEC or the FDA because they are illegal,” said Walt Wilkins, thirteenth circuit solicitor for Greenville County. “We are not putting up with it anymore, we’re not having illegal THC products sold in our county anymore and if you do, you’ll potentially suffer the consequences of prosecution and investigation.”
