Upstate woman charged after baby tests positive for drugs

The parents of a baby born in the Upstate that tested positive for fentanyl have been arrested. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office says they bagn an investigation last month after DSS reported that a blood test revealed that a baby was born with fentanyl in its system.

The newborn was eventually released to the care if its grandmother. The mother, 29 year old Bethany Christina Estepp of Spartanburg reportedly told investigators she used an opioid while knowingly pregnant and the pills must have been laced with fentanyl.

The child’s father 29 year old Marcus Ashby of Spartanburg was already on home detention on a drug trafficking charge. A warrant was obtained and the two were both arrested at a construction site in Chesnee, last week.

Ashby was found with a substance that has been sent in to be analyzed and more charges could be filed. Estepp is charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.
