7 doctor-recommended steps to living heart healthy

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – February is American Heart Month. Medical professionals said there are several steps you can take to protect yourself from heart disease.

As part of our “Ask the Expert” series, in partnership with Bon Secours St. Francis , a cardiologist shared seven steps you can take to lower your risk.

According to doctors, the heart is one of the most important muscles in the body.

“It’s the main pump that drives our entire body,” said Dr. Andrew De Nazareth.

If it’s not cared for properly, doctors said you’re at risk for what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said is the leading cause of death in the country- heart disease.

Doctor Andrew De Nazareth is a cardiologist at Bon Secours who broke down the seven recommended steps people can take to lower the risk of heart disease.

“The heartbeats about 100,000 times a day. Keeping it healthy, makes us all feel great,” said De Nazareth.

According to the CDC, it’s important, first, to know your family history.
