Upstate officer killed in line of duty inducted into SC Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame

EASLEY, S.C. (WSPA) – An Easley Police Officer killed in the line of duty was inducted into the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame Wednesday.

Easley Police Officer Matthew Hare’s End of Watch was August 2, 2023.

Upstate officer hit and killed by Amtrak train

Officer Hare and another officer responded to a mental health crisis near the railroad tracks on East Main Street where they were attempting to remove someone off the tracks when Hare was hit by an Amtrak train.

Neither the other officer nor the person they were attempting to save were injured.

Community honors Upstate officer hit, killed by train

Hare was born in Easley and graduated from Easley High School where he played football. He joined the Easley Police Department on October 10, 2022, and graduated from the Academy on March 17, 2023.

“Officer Hare died saving the life of someone he did not know,” said Easley Police Lieutenant Ashley Anderson.
