Greenville ceremony will celebrate 20th anniversary of Falls Park at Reedy River

The city of Greenville Parks & Recreation Department will host a commemorative celebration to honor the 20th anniversary of Falls Park on the Reedy River.

This celebration will take place in the upper amphitheater area of Falls Park and begins at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The event will feature performances from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Arts and The Warehouse Theatre’s Upstate Shakespeare Team, anniversary merchandise available from local clothing imprint Dapper Ink, and various food trucks along Main Street.

What is Falls Park on the Reedy River?

Falls Park on the Reedy River is a 32-acre scenic greenspace filled with waterfalls, native plants, and trees and is a central public space in downtown Greenville.

In a 1967 agreement between the city of Greenville and Furman University, the school donated six acres to the local government with the promise of creating and maintaining a park along the Reedy River.

The park opened in 2004 ending many years of decline for the downtown space near Main and Falls streets. According to Robert Miller, a local horticulturist, Falls Park became the first arboretum in South Carolina.
