For Phil Mafah, the keys to success on the offensive side of the ball are fairly clear.
The senior running back felt like the Tigers’ offense was nowhere close to playing to its potential in the season-opening loss to top-ranked Georgia in Atlanta, but felt despite the lopsided score, the offense wasn’t far off.
On top of that, heading into the App State game, the offense wanted to go out and play complimentary football and help out its defense.
“I felt like the guys were just ready this week to go out there and show what we had,” Mafah said. “To lose a game like that (to Georgia) and only get three points on the board, we knew we had more in us. So, we just really wanted to prove that to ourselves and especially to the defense. They gave us a lot of help. So, we just wanted to prove that today.”
The Tigers did just that, scoring 56 points in the first half against the Mountaineers. Clemson’s offense would shatter multiple records in the 66-20 victory, and Mafah insists that is a sample of the production the team was expecting heading into the season.
