Man accused of killing his wife in 2016 standing trial in Upstate

A suspect accused of killing his wife in is set to finally stand trial in the Upstate after he spent nearly 6 years on the run. The Simpsonville Police Department says John Tufton Blauvelt killed his wife Catherine in October of 2016.

Her body was found in an abandoned house after she was stabbed to death. The suspect was an Army Recruiter in the area but was claissified as a deserter once he fled the scene prior to the discovery of his wife’s body. Blauvelt was said to have been having an affair with a 17 year old girl from Fountain Inn.

The girl was found safe in Oregon just months after the incident. Bluavelt was apprehended in Oregon in 2022. Police say he was using the alias Ben Klein when he was taken into custody.

The trial is take place this week at the Greenville County Courthouse.
