ANDERSON, S.C. (WSPA) – A group of people is working to make a difference in Anderson.
InspireAbilities of Anderson County supports individuals who live with intellectual disabilities, spinal cord and neck injuries.
The non-profit’s Homestead program helps people become self-sufficient.
“One of the reasons we wanted to create the program was [because] we thought we were going to have some of our individuals lose their jobs within the community, and it was kind of implemented to help put in place more job opportunities for them,” explained Eileen Jewel
Leaders came up with the idea to grow a community garden to teach InspireAbilities members different skills.
“They can learn about money making skills and advertising skills,” Jewell said. “They’ll be learning to plant and how to harvest. This is all around a whole different environment than what we’ve ever offered before.”
On six acres of land near Hembree Road, there is room for five greenhouses to grow fruits and vegetables, a picnic pavilion with restrooms and a sensory garden.
