FEMA opens disaster recovery center in Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — The Freetown Community Center in Greenville is now home to FEMA’s new disaster recovery center. It provides a long-term location for people to receive the help they need after Helene.

One Greenville man who sought FEMA assistance told 7NEWS he suffered extensive water damage to his home in downtown Greenville after Helene tore through the upstate. He was one of the first few people in line at the recovery center Friday morning.

“Water coming from the backyard and the hill down into my crawl space. It was continuous for about two hours, where water rose about six inches to my crawl space, and the ducts hanging underneath were damaged,” the man said. “Had a hiccup online, trying to process the process, so just trying to get some clarity and move forward.”

Fema spokesperson Gabriel Gonzalez said representatives inside the center helped Helene victims with uploading important documents, verifying their application status, and filing appeals if their applications were denied.
