Suspect taken into custody after standoff with deputies

The suspect who barricaded himself inside an Upstate home Thursday morning has now been identified. As we previously reported, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Pine Court in Piedmont just after 8AM.

The Sheriff’s Office says the suspect, 42 year old Malcolm Niven, assaulted his parents, including his bedridden mother. He then barricaded himself in a bedroom. Deputies flew a drone to the bedroom window, Niven then grabbed it and put it in bathwater to disable it.

Deputies were able to get the victims out of the home safely. Niven reportedly fired shots at deputies, and tear gas was deployed. Niven then fell down the stairs and suffered a head injury.

He was transported to the hospital to be treated before being booked. Niven is charged with assault, firing at officers and malicious damage.
