Greenville Co. voters reject 1% sales tax

(WSPA) – A proposed tax increase has been rejected by Greenville County voters.

The intended increase would have helped to fix roads and bridges in the county. The eight year tax would have generated more than $1 billion.

The measure was defeated by fewer than 8,000 votes.

County councilman Butch Kirven said in October that “nothing changes” if the tax is not passed.

“We continue to maintain the county roads. The state, using the state gas tax incrementally across the whole state, will gradually over time work on the roads,” Kirven explained. “But, it may take 30 to 40 years. A lot of people’s lifetime won’t see any of the big improvements. This is a way to accelerate that.”

A similar sales tax on the ballot in Anderson County seemed poised to fail.
