Trash illegally left outside of Spartanburg Co. landfill on Veterans Day

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Employees at landfill sites across Spartanburg County returned to work on Tuesday to find piles of trash illegally left outside of their collection sites.

Trash collection sites across the county were closed on Monday for the Veterans Day holiday.

According to a social media message from Spartanburg County, that didn’t stop people from leaving their trash outside of some collection sites.

Photos from the Quarter Mile Road and Sand Ford Road sites showed piles of trash bags, appliance boxes, Amazon delivery boxes and other trash piled stacked against a fence.

“Just a reminder, it is illegal to leave your trash at our collection sites when we are closed,” the county said on Facebook. “Please remember that leaving trash or other items on the roadway or at our sites when closed is a crime and you can be prosecuted.”

The county Environmental Enforcement Department is investigating the dumped trash. Under state and local laws, anyone found to have left trash outside of the collection sites could face a fine of $450.
