SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A Spartanburg County woman was sentenced to two years of probation after preparing fraudulent state tax returns in 2021.
The SC Department of Revenue charged Clarella Cade with 16 counts of making or assisting in the preparation of false or fraudulent tax returns. According to arrest warrants, Cade reportedly added false business expenses totaling $422,000 for the returns.
Officials said Cade did not admit to the allegations but acknowledged the presentation of that evidence would probably result in her conviction for two counts of willful preparation of a fraudulent tax return.
Cade entered a plea, in which she did not admit to any crimes but agreed the state had evidence to convict her at trial according to officials. On Nov. 8, she was sentenced to three years in prison and a $1,000 fine, which was suspended to two years of probation.
Cade no longer prepares tax returns for others, officials said.
