The Upstate lost some beloved smaller businesses throughout 2024, including breweries , entertainment spaces and restaurants , but small businesses weren’t the only ones that closed their doors in 2024.
Some large companies in the Upstate reigned in their South Carolina operations this year, while others said goodbye altogether.
Here are some of the larger companies that left the area or scaled back their Upstate reach in 2024.
Gentherm
In February, Gentherm, an automotive company specializing in heated car seats, announced that they would shut down operations in May, laying off 124 workers in Greenville. The company relocated its work to Monterrey, Mexico.
A company spokesperson said the move was a response to the company’s efforts to improve manufacturing productivity. The move was planned in September of 2023 , according to the company’s annual report.

TTI Consumer Power Tools in Gaffney left 114 workers in Cherokee County out of jobs after announcing their closure in February. The facility closed in May.
