SC carries out first execution by firing squad in state history

COLUMBIA, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A man who had been on South Carolina’s death row for more than 20 years was executed on Friday night.

Brad Sigmon, 67, elected to die by firing squad, citing concerns about the suffering he would endure if he picked lethal injection.

Sigmon’s last meal was served on Wednesday evening: four pieces of fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits, cheesecake and sweet tea.

Jeffrey Collins of the Associated Press, one of the media witnesses to the execution, said the curtain in the death chamber was lifted around 6:01 p.m. on Friday night, allowing witnesses to see Sigmon strapped into a chair.
