Parvovirus cases contained at Spartanburg Humane Society, officials say

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Spartanburg Humane Society reports that a small outbreak of parvo has been contained.

Angel Cox, CEO of the Spartanburg Humane Society, said the canine parvovirus, commonly known as ‘parvo,’ spread to three dogs last week which led to their deaths.

The American Veterinary Medical Association describes parvo as a highly contagious disease that attacks white blood cells and the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. The symptoms of the disease include the following:

  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Severe, often bloody, diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain and bloating
  • Fever or low body temperature

Cox said the parvo cases began after someone brought a puppy to the shelter that could not be taken in at the time. That person then tied the puppy to a flag pole and left…
