Move to end or restrict Greenville public sanitation service causes angst for residents

Residents concerned about the possible dissolution of the Greater Greenville Sanitation District packed a town hall meeting seeking answers.

More than 200 turned out at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Friday night, March 21, for the town hall hosted by state Sen. Karl Allen, who represents the area served by the sanitation district. Allen and Steve Cole, the sanitation district’s executive director, spent two hours addressing concerns about two bills Greenville lawmakers, state Rep. Mike Burns (R-District 17) and Rep. Bruce Bannister (R-District 24), co-sponsored in the South Carolina House. The bills eliminate or restrict the sanitation district’s operations.

Specifically, H.B. 4002 would dissolve the sanitation district if operations veer outside its designated service area. The other bill, H.B. 4003, allows the district to operate within its boundaries and requires it to charge customers flat fees for waste pick up rather than collecting through property taxes. Both bills passed the House earlier this month and have moved to the Senate for consideration.
