Wildfire at South Carolina park surges to more than 300 acres as crews race to hold the line

PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. — A wildfire in a South Carolina state park has grown significantly as drought conditions continue to impact much of the state.

According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, the fire at Table Rock State Park has grown to more than 300 acres since it began on Friday and was still at 0% containment as of 1 p.m. on Sunday. While mandatory evacuations were not in place and no structures are currently threatened, officials said 100 voluntary evacuations were made on the east side of Table Rock State Park.

Authorities said firefighters were planning a “large-scale burnout operation” encompassing 100 to 150 acres between the wildfire and residential areas on the park’s eastern side. The operation’s goal is to eliminate potential fuel for the growing wildfire…
