Zan Wells, the artist behind the “Mice on Main” sculptures and book in downtown Greenville, was awarded the Order of the Palmetto April 5 at her home in Greenville.
Presented by former governor and U.S. secretary of education Richard Riley and Sen. Jason Elliott (R-Greenville), the award is the highest civilian honor in South Carolina and is given at the governor’s discretion for extraordinary achievement and service to the community and state.
“This award came as a complete surprise to me,” said Wells. “It was never in my thoughts to be rewarded for things I have wanted to do, have done and have loved doing. It is just such an unexpected honor. I thought having one of my sculptures installed at Brookgreen Gardens was more than wonderful. And, now, this. Life has been, and is, good to me. I am a lucky soul.”…
