Backyard chicken flocks trending amid high egg prices

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – With high egg prices at grocery stores, a poultry expert from Clemson University says many people are getting their own chickens.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the daily national average price for a dozen large eggs is around $5.90. This is a significant decline from the record high of $8.17 in March 2025.

The fluctuation in prices is due to the ongoing avian flu, or commonly known as the bird flu outbreak. It has been driving people to start their own small flocks in their backyards…
