Former long-time Gray Court Mayor John Carter passes

John Carter, who spent more than three decades as the mayor of Gray Court, died Tuesday in Greenville.

He was 83. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday (May 19) at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Gray Court. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Carter, three sons, two daughters, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Masonic rights are scheduled to be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Beasley Funeral Home Chapel in Laurens. The family will receive friends daily from 2-7 p.m. at the home in Gray Court.

Carter was mayor of Gray Court for 32 years and spent another 10 on council. He was defeated for the mayoral office in the 2018 municipal election by Stellartean Jones, who won a three-way race for the office…
