Eyes up! Southern Delta Aquariids Meteor Shower

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Dust off the telescope and keep your eyes toward the sky; the Southern Delta Aquariids Meteor Shower will be active in the coming days and into the middle of August. It will be mostly visible during its peak toward the end of July as the rate of the meteor shower increases.

The peak nights of this meteor shower are both July 29 and July 30. Meteors will be moving rapidly through the cosmos at 25 miles per second. That converts to around 90,000 miles per hour (mph). For comparison, Atlanta Braves Ace Spencer Strider’s fastball has a velocity of around 98 mph; this comet will be moving at a velocity of around 2,450 times faster than the velocity of Strider’s top fastball!

The best place to view this meteor shower is to find an area that has little to no light pollution, think of an area with no street or city lights. Along with bringing a blanket or sleeping bag, you’ll want pack a pillow as well for comfort as you find a flat piece of green real estate and stare at a 45 degree angle off into the horizon and into the northern direction of the sky…
