GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) Nearly six years after Roger Belton was found shot to death inside a building under construction in Greenville, and nearly 47 years after Chester Miller was killed during a convenience store robbery, two families and a group of determined detectives are still searching for answers.
In Episode 3 of Unsolved Upstate, we sat down again with Detective Thomas Bixby from the Greenville Police Department to discuss two unrelated and unsolved homicides that have left scars on both the victims’ families and the community.
The Murder of Roger Belton (2019)
It was a stormy fall night on October 27, 2019, when 55-year-old Roger Belton, known as “Horse,” “Pops,” and “Old Timer,” was discovered shot multiple times in an under-construction apartment near Shaw Street and Crest Lane. Roger, who authorities said was homeless at the time, often stayed in the area. His body was discovered the following day by a friend who grew concerned after not seeing him for some time.
“He didn’t deserve this,” Detective Bixby said. “Roger was a fixture in that neighborhood. Everyone knew him. Someone out there knows who did this.”
What We Know:
- Roger was last seen around 11:00 p.m. Saturday night at a nearby corner store.
- Gunshots were reportedly heard early Sunday morning.
- His body was found nearly 12-14 hours later inside the unsecured apartment.
- A potential key witness has since passed away, but police believe others still hold valuable information.
The biggest challenge now? Silence…
