Pair of unsolved murders stir pain, hope in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Two grieving families, two unresolved cases and one city are still searching for answers. This week’s episode of Unsolved Upstate returns to Spartanburg to confront the lingering pain of a pair of unrelated crimes that remain unsolved years later.

The Killing of Markeith Tracy (2015)

In 2015, Spartanburg Police said Markeith Tracy, a 23-year-old father, was shot and killed on Carlisle Street in the quiet early hours of the morning.

It happened on October 6. Spartanburg Police said Tracy was outside talking with a friend around 1:15 a.m. when a black, single-cab pickup truck with tinted windows and a distinctive rear visor pulled up. According to investigators, witnesses reported seeing two men inside, and shortly after, Tracy was shot. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Right now, with all of the witness accounts and sorting through the information we have, we can’t make a determination if there’s an existing altercation or relationship that was involved in this, or if the suspects were there looking for someone else and unfortunately led to Markeith’s death,” said Sergeant Aaron Garrett, Spartanburg Police.

Police said the area was quiet at the time, and a few people witnessed the shooting. Some residents reported being awakened by gunshots or what sounded like an argument, but investigators said no strong leads have emerged.
