GREER, S.C. (WSPA) — An Upstate woman is hosting a fundraiser to raise awareness for Friedreich’s Ataxia, a rare genetic disorder that only affects one in every 50,000 people globally.
The host, Megan Ploch, was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, or FA, at 13. She had undergone genetic blood testing a few years prior after her parents noticed that she walked differently and fell more often than others her age.
FA is a progressive disorder and primarily affects the nervous system. According to Megan, it causes “progressive balance and coordination issues, but it can also cause cardiac issues, scoliosis and diabetes, and slurred speech.”…
