Gate Breakers Beware: City of Greenville Taking Action

The City of Greenville says it’s enforcing penalties for drivers who damage parking garage gate arms — and they’re ready to take legal action.

In a video posted to the city’s Facebook page, multiple drivers are seen crashing through gate arms or physically lifting them to avoid paying parking fees.

Officials say it happens at least once a week.

Starting immediately, the city will pursue criminal charges against anyone who intentionally breaks or lifts the gates. Those convicted could face fines, jail time, and a criminal record.

Parking Services Administrator Bill Foster says, “This isn’t about punishment. We just want to stop the behavior.”

City of Greenville News Release:Sept. 17, 2025 - The City of Greenville has announced plans to take stronger steps to reduce parking gate damage in City-owned garages. Starting immediately, the City will pursue criminal charges against motorists who intentionally break or lift gates to avoid paying to leave downtown parking garages.
