Tropical Storm Gabrielle starts to strengthen through the weekend

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Tropical Storm Gabrielle starts to strengthen over the weekend, turns away from Bermuda.

As Gabrielle moves into an area with less wind shear and less dry air, strengthening is slow but steady. The storm is expected to become a hurricane Sunday and strengthen little more through Tuesday before starting to weaken late next week in the cooler North Atlantic waters.

The system continues to slide around the Bermuda high traveling to the northwest the next few days then turning more north Sunday before it reaches Bermuda. It’s expected to be far enough east of the island that there’s only a low chance for tropical storm conditions early next week.

We get no direct impacts in the US and since Gabrielle stays far enough away from us and it’s a large or particularly intense storm, we aren’t even too worried about rip current risks or choppy surf…
