On a day that Greenville Sheriff’s Office announces a major drug arrest and seizure, the Oconee Courtroom was again the scene for defendants in front of a sentencing judge. This morning a first-time offender of the state’s drug laws, Joseph Kingsbury, entered an Alford plea to a Pickens County charge of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine first offense. The court heard that the amount of meth weighed eight grams. Kingsbury avoids a guilty plea but acknowledges, as Judge Sprouse explained, is an acknowledgement that evidence at trial should support a conviction. Because of Kingsbury’s circumstances, Sprouse deemed the defendant a candidate for a pre-trial diversion program known as the South Carolina Criminal Conditional Discharge……
