Cotton-destroying insect in Ga. threatens S.C.’s okra crops

CLEMSON, S.C. – Officials warned that South Carolina okra growers are facing an unexpected pest, in some cases resulting in complete crop loss.

Experts said the state is experiencing a “significant infestation” of two-spotted leafhoppers, also known as the “cotton jassid.” The small, pale green insect has transparent wings with a distinctive black spot near the tip of each wing.

The insect has migrated north from Florida and feeds on the leaves of cotton, okra, sunflowers, eggplants and other plants…
