Former sheriff apologizes after revelations he spent taxpayer money on cigarettes, Chick-fil-A

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) – A former sheriff is apologizing for his actions after pleading guilty to federal charges of wire fraud, obtaining controlled substances by misrepresentation and conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds.

Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright could serve up to 20 years in prison, in addition to paying hefty fines for his crimes.

According to the charging documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Wright “abused his position as elected Sheriff… to siphon money from Spartanburg County.”…
