GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A severe solar storm has caused people as far south as the western Carolinas to see the Northern Lights.
A strong geomagnetic storm is expected to occur on Wednesday. A large coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun, which is a massive eruption of plasma from the Sun’s corona, will interact with Earth’s magnetic field causing the Northern Lights to be seen unusually far south.
People across the western Carolinas reported seeing the lights Tuesday evening. This particular solar storm is ranked as a severe G4 geomagnetic storm.
